The Stepwell Quilted Kimono Jacket
Product Details
The Stepwell Kimono Jacket is a wearable interpretation of architectural memory and childhood imagination. Part of our collection A Place Called Small, this piece draws inspiration from the iconic stepwells of India, particularly Chand Baori, one of the deepest and most visually striking stepwells, often associated with the desert landscape and heritage of Jaisalmer.
Stepwells were not only sources of water, but places of gathering, rhythm, and repetition. Their geometric stair patterns, earthy materials, and quiet grandeur form the foundation of this design.
The jacket features a bold colour-blocked palette rooted in desert architecture. A warm terracotta orange dominates the body, echoing sun-baked stone and sandstone walls. Soft sand-beige panels ground the garment, referencing lime plaster and aged masonry, while muted teal accents along the neckline, sleeve edges, and fabric tie bring in a sense of water, depth, and contrast. The inside is finished with a clean white quilted lining, offering visual relief and breathable comfort.
Design and technique are central to this piece. The front pockets feature stepped appliqué motifs, inspired by the repeating stair formations of stepwells. These geometric shapes are carefully cut and appliquéd, celebrating precision and hand-led craft. The deep V neckline is framed in teal, drawing the eye inward like a descending stairway, while the fabric tie closure sits at the centre, functional yet sculptural.
The back becomes a canvas for storytelling. A large architectural appliqué composition mirrors the layered geometry of Chand Baori, with stepped forms arranged symmetrically and finished with a small arched doorway detail at the base. This arched motif references thresholds, entrances, and the idea of shelter, reinforcing the collection’s theme of dwellings, both real and imagined.
Crafted in 100% cotton twill and quilted with 100% cotton single-layer batting, the jacket offers gentle warmth while remaining lightweight and breathable. The relaxed kimono silhouette allows ease of movement and layering, making it suitable across seasons.
Designed to be unisex, the Stepwell Kimono Jacket moves beyond traditional gendered colour codes. It is intended to be shared, layered, and passed on, much like the stories and spaces that inspired it.
